The Arangetram is the traditional, on-stage debut of the student. Historically it has marked the transition of the dancer from a student to a professional performing artist. It consists of the typical repertoire, or ‘margam’, which is designed to best showcase the different skills required of a Bharatanatyam dancer. The margam ranges from use of abhinaya (expression) to convey emotions and tell stories, to nritta (pure dance) to illustrate the dancer’s command of rhythm.
